Course Description

The demands of the modern pulpit challenge all preachers to rise to the occasion every Sunday morning. While the introductory course on preaching shows a basic approach, this course will explore the unique gift of each preacher to tailor-make each individual style. The students will learn tools to calibrate individual parts of the sermon through understanding of how rhetoric works so that this is only the beginning and not the end of a lifetime journey into homiletic. This course uses a more personal approach to equip them for this admirable task. The task should be divided into exegesis, ethics, theology and rhetoric. Theological education tends to keep the disciplines of exegesis, ethics and theology in separate discipline. Such studies without proper expressions can be a hindrance instead of help in preaching. The students in this course will learn to integrate these disciplines into a rhetorical whole so that their preaching will build up their congregations every Sunday morning.

Course Goal(s)

  1. Integration of biblical studies, theology and ethics with homiletic.
  2. Fine tuning personal preaching style and gifts.
  3. Understanding of rhetorical devices and biblical genres in homiletics.
  4. Mastery of exegetical tools.
  5. Making exegesis and theology work for preaching.

Course Outcomes

  1. Preaching different genres of the Bible.
  2. Understanding the difference between exegetical data and their sermonic form.
  3. Making exegetical data relevant in the real world.
  4. Shortening of sermon preparation time.
