CAREY WELCOMES NEW FACULTY – JIMMY CHAN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF THEOLOGY
Jimmy Chan is a Ph.D. (ABD) in Theological Studies at the University of Toronto. His primary research areas include Augustine’s theology of emotions and happiness, theological anthropology, trinitarian theology, ecclesiology and political theology, as well as historical theology, Stoicism and Christianity, biblical theology and Christian ethics. As a pastor-theologian, he is interested in exploring the theological relevance and applications of Patristics to the contemporary world and church settings.
“We are excited to welcome Jimmy Chan as Assistant Professor of Theology,” announced Dr. Colin Godwin, President of Carey Theological College. “During the interview process, we were impressed with Jimmy’s teaching ability, scholarship and his commitment to participate in Carey’s mission together, as we prepare men and women as pastors, missionaries and Christian leaders in Canada and around the world.”
Jimmy Wai Ming Chan will begin his teaching responsibilities at Carey in September 2021. Prior to his Ph.D. studies at the University of Toronto, Chan received his B.A.Sc., B.Sc., and B.A. from the University of British Columbia and M.Sc. from the University of Toronto as well as his M.Div. and Th.M. from Alliance Bible Seminary in Hong Kong. His dissertation is focused on the critical exploration of Augustine’s Christian theology of emotions and happiness. As a pastor-theologian, his interests lie in exploring the theological relevance and application of the early church Fathers to the contemporary world and church settings, equipping God’s kingdom workers with sound theological education.
From an early age, Jimmy has known and felt the presence of God, having come to grow in his faith through various encounters and opportunities in Hong Kong as well as in Canada, including pastoring and ministering at several churches. Jimmy has served as a part-time pastoral staff at Richmond Hill Christian Community Church for the last five years. Serving as a Pastor of Fellowship Ministry in Intentional Discipleship Pathway, he has been responsible for a variety of ministries, including teaching, designing course curriculum and cultivating young and career adults.
Chan is the recipient of the 2021 Congress Graduate Merit Award granted by The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He has published and presented papers at various academic conferences including the Canadian Society of Patristic Studies (CSPS), the North American Patristics Society (NAPS), and international conferences in China, Japan and England. His teaching areas include Biblical Theology, Christianity and Ethics, Apologetics, and Biblical Greek.
