What brought you to Carey?

When I started the MDiv program I loved the hybrid system of on campus for a week and then online. I was teaching at a secular university and realized that I was getting a richer experience than my grad students were getting in class. The difference was the increased input from colleagues and depth of experience from returning students along with the decreased reliance on lectures from the prof.

What was your favourite aspect of your time at Carey?

The academics were good but I loved the diverse student body and the international students were a huge gift. I always looked forward to the weeks on campus and I never ceased to enjoy studying with students from all streams of Christianity. It was such a rich fellowship.

What do you intend to do next?

I'm built a retreat space for clergy in my home on Samish Island. Clergy are pretty stressed right now and a place to rest, reflect and study in the privacy of the small apt seems to be a source of deep refreshment so I'm making it my retirement gig as an "honorably retired" Presbyterian minister. Oh, and I'm working with several others to develop a small island fellowship.

How has your degree helped you in your ministry?

My MDiv provided the basic degree to pastor with competence and joy. My stent as a doctoral student helped me figure out what was important and what wasn't. Because of my research, I am getting to participate fully in helping to change the face of lay training for pastoral service in my denomination. Several of those advance courses advanced my skills particularly those with Daryl Guider and Darrell Johnson.
